If you have just been arrested for Driving Under the Influence
(DUI)/Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) for the first time, you
may feel uncertain about the resulting court proceedings.
Unfamiliar with the criminal justice system, you may consider
having a ³friend of a friend² or your familyıs lawyer represent
you on the charges. This may be a critical mistake. DUI/DWI law
can be quite complex. Furthermore, the stakes are higheven as
a first time offender, you may face hefty fines, probation,
revocation of your license and a dramatic rise in your
automobile insurance rates. You may even be sentenced to some
jail time. Therefore, it is important to hire a defense
attorney who has experience in this area of law.

Singer:
The police are not required to read you any Miranda rights
("You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can
and will be used against you. . . .). The Miranda rights
are required only if the police or prosecutor want to use
what you say against you in court. The rights were
developed to make sure that a person knows that he or she
does not have to talk to the police, and thus to make sure
that any statements made to the police are made
voluntarily. In practice, the police often do not tell the
truth about having given the rights, or read them to you in
a way that makes you think that you have to talk. You
should NEVER talk to the police without first contacting a
lawyer.
